court punishes school bully

Unit 1 - Factual Recount
Court Punishes School Bully

A girl of 12 has won a court case against a school bully.
A 16-year-old female harasser was charged with common assault
yesterday, even though the girl had not laid a hand on her 12-year-old victim.
The once happy-go-lucky youngster was left upset and troubled
by the other girls harassment, threats and insults. The court case,
thought to be the first of its kind involving
a child, was started after her desperate mother asked police for advice.
The mother felt her daughters’ school had been ignoring the problem.
The girl had undergone a complete personality change because of
the older girls’ actions. Her self-confidence was shattered and she came to
believe the older girls’ insults that she was ‘goofy and ugly’.
The 16 year old was given a two-year supervision order at a youth court,
after admitting her behaviour.
The court heard that the assault was of an emotional and mental type, which changed t
he girl from a happy child into being unhappy, nervous and shy.
Afterwards, the 12-year-old’s solicitor said: ‘You can see a bruise or a black eye but you can’t see how
someone’s mind is being affected’.
The court heard how months of bullying had worn out the younger girl who was so afraid of being
attacked that she arranged for her mother to collect her from school.
On one occasion the older girl threatened the 12-year-old and asked if she liked hospital food.
The court chairman said to the older girl: ‘ You were older and bigger.
You cannot go through life pushing people about’.
Police praised the victim and her mother having the courage to go through with the case.
